Avis Blackthorn and the Ring of Enchantment by Jack Simmonds (English review)

Avis Blackthorn and the Ring of Enchantment (An Avis Blackthorn Magical Adventure, Prequel Book 0)

„Avis Blackthorn and the Ring of Enchantment“ is the prequel of the Avis Adventure series, written by Jack Simmonds. It plays six weeks before Avis starts Hailing Hall School for Wizards.

The Cover: It is an interesting drawing with Avis, the rabbit and the pig and is also funny and suitable for the readers.

The Plot: The 12-year old Avis Blackthorn is the only good wizard in a family which consists only of evil wizards who are serving Malakai, the most evil wizard of all time. The magical kingdom is in another dimension than the Outside (where all normal, non-magical people live). The Blackthorns live in the Darkhampton Manor, a castle where darkness always resides, even though the castle lays in the sunniest kingdom of all. Nothing grows there and it’s no fun for Avis because he is bullied by his nine older siblings, for example Marianne and Gertrude change him into a mouse. Besides of that, Avis is a bitter disappointment for his parents because Avis is so good. And his name also leads to that he has no friends and no foe, and therefore he is the loner of the family. And not even the Butler Kilkenny from Ireland likes Avis.

One day, his parents are on their way to poison a princess and Avis gets a warning that if he doesn’t „cause any damage around the castle, there will be severe punishment around the castle.“

Of course, Butler Kilkenny wants that Avis does all the housework because Kilkenny is lazy and Avis has no chance to defend because Kilkenny would starve him otherwise and Avis only went to theoretical magical training.

So Avis is really anxious and excited to go to the magical school and he also can’t wait to use his chancellor (you can’t do real magic without one). And the chancellor his family have, is an exceptional one: the Ring of Enchantment, the most prized possession in the magical world. With the Ring of Enchantment you can make things alive and what would be better than turning his plush pet, Sedrik, his only and best friend, into a real rabbit?

However, when Sedrik out of a sudden vanishes into a fairy ring with the chancellor in the hand, Avis needs to return it or he will get to know the wrath of his parents.

Other characters included are the jolly and talkative Bernard and his sarcastic pig „Horse“. And many other ones from famous fairy tales, however, adapted a bit: Cinderella, who sues her stepmother in the end, the big bad wolf who has to collect debts the three little pigs own and Snow White who is not welcomed by the dwarves.

Avis gets aware that many people in the fairyland need help and he has so little time to find Sedrik.

Where is Sedrik?
Who is the cursed princess?
And when a bad witch also searches for the chancellor…
Can Avis get the Ring of Enchantment back?

All in all, I really liked the story, especially the end: „Bernard made me realize that friends need to be real in the first place. With warts and all.“ Avis narrative was like usual, really humorous and I love that the Blackthorn manor and family was more described by the author.
Some mistakes were made, though: for example, in the first book, Avis is the seventh son and it is described as being special to be a seventh son because seventh sons have unique magical abilities. But he has nine older siblings in the prequel. And the prequel also seemed to stop so suddenly at the end when his mother talked with Avis.

Kind regards,
